Ongoing Programs

MEMBERSHIP PROGRAMS

1. Monthly Meetings. Each meeting (September through June) contains a social segment and an educational program. The educational program usually involves a lecture, a panel discussion, or a video presentation designed 1) to explain some element of Catholicism or Judaism, or 2) to engage the members in a dialogue on relevant issues.

2. Visits to Churches and Synagogues to observe worship services and to make a statement to the congregations by our presence.

3. Visits to Catholic or Jewish sites, such as museums, convents, monasteries, and seminaries, Holocaust resource centers, and the like.

4. Christmas / Hanukkah party.  Members, guests, and children invited.  The party includes an explanation of Hanukkah and Advent/Christmas, accompanied by a lighting of the Advent Wreath and the Menorah. Held each December in place of the regular business meeting.

5. Annual Joint Meeting with the Rockaway Catholic-Jewish Council, when they were operational. The meeting featured a meal and an educational program.

6. Annual Awards Dinner. Awards are given to Council members and members of the community in recognition of their efforts to further the work of the Council.

 COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

1. Community educational programs, such as lectures, seminars, and courses. Free and open to the public.

2. Children’s Interfaith Seder. Children from a Catholic and a Jewish school participate without cost in a model Seder, presided over by a rabbi or cantor. The Seder is financed and staffed by the Council, and is held in either the facilities of a church or synagogue.

3. Triennial Holocaust Memorial Service. This service is conducted in a church by the Council from a program written especially for this service by a Council member, and is intended for the general community. Held every three years in November close to Krystallnacht.

4. Community Speakers' Bureau. Council members have spoken free of charge before various community groups.

5. Annual Bishop Mugavero / Rabbi Tanenbaum Memorial Concert. Held annually from 1995 through 2000 (six concerts in all). Featured the participation of choirs from neighboring churches and synagogues. At the time, the concerts were also the Council’s principal fundraiser.
